Former President Jacob Zuma has been actively involved in supporting the newly established uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), which he regards as an alternative to the ANC under Cyril Ramaphosa. Zuma has positioned the MKP as a platform to challenge what he views as a betrayal of the liberation struggle by the current ANC leadership.

The party, formed earlier in 2023, has rapidly gained attention, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, as it seeks to consolidate its position ahead of South Africa's 2024 elections. The MKP's internal structures, as outlined by Zuma, emphasize centralized leadership with minimal focus on elective conferences, ostensibly to avoid internal divisions. Instead, Zuma and the party leadership are focused on grassroots mobilization and establishing regional structures to build a solid support base. The Constitutional Court recently ruled that Zuma is ineligible to run for office in 2024, presenting a significant challenge to his direct involvement.

However, he has urged party members to prioritize unity and transparency in choosing his successor. Zuma also called for alliances with "progressive parties" while rejecting cooperation with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the ANC under Ramaphosa's leadership.
