The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has responded to the African National Congress’s (ANC) recent statements on the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) by emphasizing the importance of maintaining political accountability within this coalition. The GPU, an alliance that includes the ANC, DA, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and National Freedom Party (NFP), was formed in KZN after the May 2024 elections when no single party achieved a majority.

In this coalition, the DA has secured two provincial government portfolios and chairs several legislative committees, prompting DA leaders to stress that they should be distinctly recognized in these roles. DA KZN chief whip Imran Keeka highlighted that identifying DA-led departments helps the public hold them accountable, as the DA does not want to be associated with all GPU decisions, particularly those led by other parties. Meanwhile, the ANC in KZN has clarified that while it supports the GPU structure, it does not wish to be seen as responsible for the full scope of the provincial government’s actions, underscoring its accountability only in portfolios it directly oversees.

Amidst concerns from other political groups like the South African Communist Party (SACP) over the GPU’s long-term effectiveness, DA leaders in KZN have expressed confidence in the stability of the GPU, distancing it from recent coalition instabilities seen in Gauteng. Francois Rodgers, DA KZN leader, reassured that the provincial GPU, being led by the IFP as the majority party, operates independently from the national political dynamics that have impacted other coalitions elsewhere.
