Political analyst Sandile Swana asserts that there are underlying "racial tensions" within the Democratic Alliance (DA) because of the departure of black leaders. This comes after 24-year-old rising star Liam Jacobs, a DA member of Parliament, effectively left the party to join the Patriotic Alliance (PA). The DA confirmed that Jacobs' membership was automatically terminated after he appeared in a video promoting the PA, despite the fact that he has not officially resigned.
Helen Zille, chair of the DA Federal Council, told Parliament that Jacobs was no longer a member, which also means that he loses his seat in the National Assembly. Jacobs, known for his assertive questioning in committee meetings, recently clashed with South African Football Association (SAFA) officials during a sports portfolio committee session. Coworkers also criticized his social media activity, with some claiming that he used meetings to boost his online profile. A Continuity of Departures Swana argues that racial tensions are to blame for the departure of Jacobs and other black and colored leaders from the DA.
Swana stated, "Liam's departure from the DA comes at a time when coloured communities have felt neglected in both the ANC and the DA." He also mentioned other well-known departures, like MP Mmusi Maimane and former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba, who later expressed concerns about the party's racial dynamics. Jacobs denied receiving any job offers from the PA in a statement, but he has not elaborated on his reasons for leaving the DA. The DA maintains that Jacobs’ exit was procedural, citing its constitution which bars members from promoting rival parties. However, analysts suggest the move reflects deeper dissatisfaction among minority leaders within the party. As South Africa heads toward elections, lets hope the DA’s ability to retain diverse leadership remain intact.
