If the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) were to be expelled from the Government of National Unity (GNU), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has pleaded with the Democratic Alliance (DA) not to dismantle it. Velenkosini Hlabisa, the president of the party, addressed the media following the two-day national executive committee (NEC) meeting that took place over the weekend.
He stated that the members of the NEC had expressed concern about the situation following the disagreement between the ANC and the DA regarding the GNU. Hlabisa said the conclusion that the DA would not pull out from the GPU was informed by its previous decision in the Gauteng Metros where it did not pull out from the GNU after it was removed from all Gauteng Metros. We are confident that the stable government of KwaZulu-Natal would not be impacted if the DA were to leave the GNU. "It would be unreasonable for anyone to wish for the instability in the nation to spread to the province.
Hlabisa stated, "We don't think the party will want to cause disruptions in the province if it leaves the GNU." The DA did not leave the GNU when it was removed in Tshwane, the City of Johannesburg, or Ekurhuleni. He added that even when the DA was not included in the Gauteng Provincial Government of Unity, it did not pull out from the GNU. Furthermore, Hlabisa stated that his party would rather strengthen the GNU by ensuring that all budget promises are kept. He added that his party would monitor everything in the departments to ensure that the budget allocations are actually being channeled to the services that the Finance Minister had announced.
Hlabisa outlined his party's decision to vote for the budget's passage last week and stated that the budget will ensure the employment of teachers, nurses, and doctors who had been highlighted in the party's election campaign. He further stated that the president would call an emergency cabinet meeting where the measures to grow the economy would be discussed so that the current Valued Added Tax increase would be a temporary .measure. IFP is leading the GPU in KwaZulu-Natal working with the ANC, DA and the National Freedom Party.
