Nomvula Mokonyane, the African National Congress (ANC) First Deputy Secretary-General, has been actively involved in discussions about the party's leadership and renewal in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Following the ANC's electoral setbacks in KZN during the 2024 general elections, where the party's support significantly declined, the national leadership has been evaluating the performance of its provincial structures.

In July 2024, Mokonyane led meetings with the ANC's eThekwini Regional Executive Committee and the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to assess the party's performance and strategize on renewal efforts. Despite internal debates within the ANC about possibly disbanding certain provincial structures due to poor electoral outcomes, Mokonyane has consistently opposed such moves. She emphasized that the national leadership had not discussed disbanding the KZN PEC and instead focused on evaluating and strengthening existing structures. In January 2025, the ANC announced plans to reconfigure its leadership in Gauteng and KZN following electoral losses.

This reconfiguration aims to reconstruct the leadership in these provinces to address challenges and improve performance. As part of the ANC's 113th-anniversary celebrations, Mokonyane was expected to deliver the keynote address in Pietermaritzburg, KZN. The event was set to reflect on the party's renewal program and outline plans for the year ahead. Throughout these initiatives, Mokonyane has highlighted the importance of internal assessments and the need for the ANC to renew and unite itself to continue leading society effectively.
