South Africa has officially assumed the presidency of the G20 for the 2024-2025 term, marking the first time an African nation has led this significant global economic forum. The ceremonial handover occurred at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted the presidency from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

South Africa's presidency will focus on the theme "Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability," aiming to address global inequalities, foster sustainable development, and promote multilateral cooperation. Key priorities for South Africa include: 1. Economic Recovery and Resilience: Enhancing global cooperation to tackle the economic effects of recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. 2. Throughout its presidency, South Africa plans to host around 130 meetings across its nine provinces, spotlighting its commitment to inclusivity and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
