Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Glynnis Breytenbach has voiced concerns about a loan transaction involving Justice Minister Thembi Simelane, calling it "dodgy" and urging the minister to step down. Simelane, while serving as mayor of Polokwane Municipality, took a loan from Gundo Wealth Solutions via VBS to buy a coffee shop in Sandton.

In a Newzroom Afrika interview, Breytenbach highlighted several suspicious aspects of the loan, despite Simelane's claims that it was a legitimate, fully repaid commercial transaction. The flow of funds—from the municipality to VBS, then to Gundo Wealth Solutions, and finally to Simelane—raised red flags. Breytenbach noted that Gundo Wealth Solutions is not a commercial bank and that investing municipal funds in such a mutual bank might violate the Financial Management of Municipalities Act (FMMA).

Breytenbach called for a thorough investigation by the police and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and suggested that Simelane should temporarily step down to ensure an unbiased probe. She emphasized the conflict of interest, given Simelane's current role overseeing the NPA while being investigated herself, and stressed the importance of public trust. The decision for Simelane to step down lies with the President, who has promised to address the matter. Breytenbach believes the investigation should be swift and manageable as part of the broader VBS issue.
