Due to heavy rains that began on Thursday afternoon, the Upper Highway area of Durban, which includes Pinetown, Hillcrest, and Kloof, has been severely affected by flooding. To avoid getting stuck on flooded bridges or roads, residents have been urged not to travel outside of their normal routines. ALS Paramedics said it had attended to Stapleton Road in Pinetown after receiving reports that two vehicles had washed away.
Even though the reports have not yet been confirmed, ALS paramedic Garrith Jamieson stated that emergency services are at the scene to attempt to locate the vehicles. He claimed that the road was clogged with water and that the river next to it was moving quickly. On Facebook, the Durban Metro Police stated that the M19 Westbound under the N2 bridge is currently flooded and impassable. It stated that a number of vehicles are already entangled in the water. The N2 under Wandsbeck Road in front of Westwood Mall, according to the police, is also flooded, with only one lane open for traffic.
According to the Metro police in Kloof, severe flooding has rendered Patrick Duncan Road impassable at the moment. A notice posted on the Upper Highway Information group on Facebook by the Kloof Community Policing Forum says that several roads in the area are flooded. "We are doing our best to assess and assist at each location because we have multiple cars stuck up to the height of the window. We also have trees down on multiple roads as well - we won't get to all of them tonight but will danger tape those we can't get to." According to the notice, Kloof Falls Road is closed between Kloof Falls and Ronalds Road through the gorge. Other reports said that the Kloof Village Mall was also flooded.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 6 warning for severe weather with a high risk of flooding and damage before the heavy rains arrived. The warning is in effect until Friday, March 14 at midnight. The affected municipalities are eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mkhambathini, Ndwedwe, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, uMuziwabantu and Umzumbe.
