Mbalula emphasized that Zuma's departure had harmed the ANC and that those with ties to him would be removed, labeling Zuma as the party's enemy. Mbalula, elected as secretary-general during the ANC's 2022 elective conference, criticized factionalism and infighting for the party's election losses.
He was part of the ANC's national working committee visiting KwaZulu-Natal to assess the party's poor election performance, which saw a significant drop in support. Chairperson Siboniso Duma acknowledged that some ANC members were working with MKP to unseat the party. Following the election losses, the ANC had to join the Government of Provincial Unity with former adversaries. Mbalula stated that the party would engage with branches to revive its image and regain voter support. Amid speculation about leadership changes, Mbalula said any decisions would be based on a thorough assessment of the situation.
He reiterated that Zuma, who was expelled for violating the ANC's constitution, had cost the party significant support in KwaZulu-Natal. Zuma's appeal period expired after being found guilty of bringing the party into disrepute. Some regions suggested halting party conferences until after the 2026 local government elections.
