Just over a week into his presidency, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders with global consequences. One of the latest actions directly impacting South Africa and the broader African continent is the suspension of foreign aid, including funding from the USAID programme. USAID has played a crucial role in supporting millions worldwide in the fight against HIV/AIDS, providing essential resources for clean water, healthcare infrastructure, and child health services.

Addressing the issue, Trump remarked, "We get tired of giving massive amounts of money to countries that hate us, don't we?" South Africa receives approximately R8.5 billion from the U.S. to support various health initiatives, particularly those combatting AIDS. The sudden halt in funding has already led to serious repercussions. The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI), a key research organisation focused on HIV, reproductive health, and vaccine-preventable diseases, has announced the indefinite closure of its clinic. Additionally, several NGOs working on HIV/AIDS-related projects across the country have begun suspending services due to the funding cuts.

Engage Men's Health, a clinic that provided free and confidential sexual health services to LGBTQ+ men, has also shut down following a "stop-work order" from its donors. In a statement, the organisation urged clients to seek alternative healthcare options. "We understand the urgency of your health needs and encourage clients to access ARVs or PrEP at their nearest public health facility. For PEP, please visit a local clinic or consult a pharmacist within 72 hours," the statement read. The organisation expressed regret over the disruption and assured clients of their commitment to their well-being. However, due to the funding crisis, they are unable to provide further details at this time.
