Despite facing a corruption investigation and having indicated his willingness to step aside, suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will continue to perform party organizational duties, according to the African National Congress (ANC).
Mchunu, who is a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC), has already testified before the ad hoc committee of Parliament, but he has not yet testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which was set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Following the Commission's announcement, ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu confirmed in a statement that Mchunu had "indicated his willingness to step aside from organizational work."
According to Bhengu, "in accordance with the movement's values of accountability, discipline, and respect for due process," Mchunu's continued cooperation with the Madlanga Commission and the ANC Integrity Commission is acknowledged by the ANC. According to Bhengu, "The National Executive Committee (NEC) discussed the circumstances surrounding Comrade Mchunu's matter and, consistent with the provisions of the ANC Constitution and established policy on such matters, agreed that he would continue to perform organizational tasks while on special leave from his Cabinet responsibilities." Mchunu was given a leave of absence from his Cabinet duties. She added that the NEC would "revisit its discussion should new developments arise that warrant further consideration" and that the ANC would "continue to monitor developments."
Bhengu said, "As a movement rooted in renewal and ethical leadership, the ANC reiterates that once a member is charged with a crime, they voluntarily step aside from their responsibilities until such matters are resolved." "The organization's enduring commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability is reflected in this policy position, which is unique to the ANC." Mchunu appointed Sithembiso Mshengu, a political communicator and former ANC Youth League activist, as his personal spokesperson last week. Mshengu will handle all media queries related to Mchunu’s upcoming appearance before the Madlanga Commission and his testimony before Parliament’s ad hoc committee.
