On January 15, 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa attended the inauguration of Mozambique's President-Elect, Daniel Chapo, in Maputo. This event followed Mozambique's presidential, legislative, and provincial elections held on October 9, 2024. President Ramaphosa was accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, and Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.

The South African delegation's presence underscored the strong fraternal relations between the two neighboring countries. The inauguration was seen as an opportunity for the people of Mozambique to unite towards peace, democracy, and development. President Ramaphosa expressed his eagerness to collaborate closely with President Chapo to further strengthen bilateral relations and support Mozambique's efforts in building a brighter future. However, the post-election period in Mozambique was marked by unrest, with opposition parties disputing the election results and organizing protests that reportedly resulted in approximately 150 fatalities.

Despite these challenges, the inauguration proceeded as planned, symbolizing a step towards national unity and stability. President Ramaphosa's attendance at the inauguration highlights South Africa's commitment to regional solidarity and its support for democratic processes within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The event also provided a platform for reinforcing diplomatic ties and exploring avenues for mutual cooperation in areas such as economic development and security.
